Your Mission
As a Senior Backend Engineer at Wheel The World, you will be at the heart of designing and building scalable backend systems that support our cutting-edge travel solutions. Leveraging Node.js, Express, and an event-driven architecture grounded in Domain-Driven Design (DDD), you will develop efficient, reliable, and secure backend services. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure alignment with business requirements, driving technical decisions that contribute to the growth and success of our platform.
You’ll write clean, maintainable, and well-documented code, while implementing best practices for testing and performance optimization. In addition to backend development, you will manage and optimize our AWS infrastructure using Terraform, and ensure adherence to DevOps best practices, focusing on continuous integration, deployment, and operational excellence.

💡 Responsibilities (up to 8)
- Backend Development: Take full ownership of backend development, designing and implementing event-driven distributed services using Node.js, Express, and a DDD approach.
- Event-Driven Architecture: Build and maintain reliable, asynchronous systems that leverage event-based communication, ensuring smooth data flow and decoupled services.
- Infrastructure Management: Manage and optimise cloud infrastructure on AWS, using Terraform for infrastructure as code, ensuring scalable, secure, and cost-efficient backend services.
- Collaboration: Work closely with Product, UX, Frontend and Platform teams to ensure the alignment of technical solutions with business needs and overall system architecture.
- DevOps & CI/CD: Implement and enforce DevOps best practices, including CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, monitoring, and alerting to ensure high system reliability.
- Performance Optimization: Identify and address performance bottlenecks, ensuring low-latency, scalable, and highly available backend services.
- Security: Apply secure coding standards to protect backend systems from vulnerabilities, ensuring data integrity and security across all services.
- Mentorship: Mentor and guide junior engineers, especially in setting up and enforcing backend coding standards and best practices, fostering a culture of technical excellence and continuous learning.

- 5+ years of professional experience in backend development.
- Proven experience with event-driven architecture and asynchronous communication patterns.
- Solid understanding and hands-on experience with Domain-Driven Design (DDD) principles.
- Familiarity with containerization (Docker) and orchestration (Kubernetes is a plus).
- Strong experience with databases (SQL and NoSQL), data modeling, and optimizing systems for performance.
- Strong problem-solving skills, with experience in agile methodologies and DevOps best practices.
- A track record of setting up and enforcing backend coding standards and best practices, with a focus on mentoring other engineers.
- Passion for travel and technology, with an eagerness to contribute to the travel-tech industry.
- Proven experience working in product-driven companies, with a strong understanding of both technical and business perspectives. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to align technical solutions with business goals, ensuring that development efforts contribute to the overall success of the product and company.

- Expertise in cloud infrastructure management, particularly with AWS, and in Terraform for managing infrastructure as code.
- Expertise in building and scaling backend systems from the ground up.
